Splurge: Rita Ora’s The London Hotel Casadei Neon Patent Pointy Pumps

by Faith

There have been tons of comparisons between Rita Ora and Rihanna, but with her new favorite cone bra, she is channeling another famous songstress in Madonna. She rocked it yet again at The London Hotel in West Hollywood with a grommet skirt and $740 Casadei Neon Patent Pointy Pumps:

Her neon pumps feature a pointed toe silhouette and 4.7″ heels.

I am definitely feeling the shoes, but this look is kind of “Best of the 80′s”. It resembles a costume more than actual ready to wear: I think the grommets and styling of the jacket take it over the top.

Nevertheless, if you’re up for the splurge you can get her pumps at www.luisaviaroma.com.

What do you think? Would you wear it?

Top Shoe Trends for Pre-Fall ’12

Stella McCartney Biography Image

By Regina Smith Popp

Pointy-toe pumps … Smoking slippers … Ladylike bows … A host of boots … As the pre-fall shows come to a close, it’s clear that designers have upped the ante with updated silhouettes and clever details on some of the hottest looks.

The single-soled pump makes a swift statement for pre-fall, with the pointy-toe look clearly back on top. Designers often paired the style with man-tailored suits to give the ensembles a feminine feel. Such was the case at both Céline and Yigal Azrouël, while a more tongue-in-cheek take on the tux appeared at DSquared, also grounded with a pair of pointy-toe pumps.

Jason Wu and Marco Zanini at Rochas also played with variations on the classic pump: Wu added an asymmetrical strap, while Zanini styled light-colored shoes with knee-high wool socks.

Fresh takes on the pump also came from New York designers Alexander Wang and Diane von Furstenberg, who both experimented with a higher vamp. Wang still managed to show toe cleavage via sheer nude mesh on his version of the court shoe. And the word “shoetie” comes to mind to describe von Furstenberg’s latest footwear silhouette, where the vamp has crept up almost to the ankle on a slick black leather slip-on with square toe.

And menswear-inspired styles continue, with sleeker lines and richer details coming on strong for pre-fall. Gucci riffed on the penny loafer with a sleek high-heeled pump, while two-tone oxfords looked fresh again in black and blue at Carven. The smoking slipper received a sophisticated update at Valentino with an oversized stud detail, while Stella McCartney and Lanvin both opted for tailored bows for their signature smoking styles.

In fact, the bow also popped up in multiple incarnations of flats, pumps and even boots. Kate Spade worked the delicate ballet bow onto colorful pumps. And Nina Ricci added a matching bow to snakeskin ankle boots. Sonia Rykiel preferred her bows untied, opting for an accordion ribbon embellishment for both flat loafers and mid-calf boots.

In the boot category, Balenciaga added a pointy toe to edgy low-heeled ankle boots featuring mixed materials and wedge-like cone heels. At Diesel, a shearling trim added a luxe vibe to a wedge boot. Burgundy emerged as an important color for the season, appearing at Chloe in an unadorned knee-high style with square toe.

Givenchy tapped into a space-age military mindset for extra-high knee boots with a leather overlay and tailored buckle that were color-matched to each look. And Versace took its boots up a notch, showing up-to-there leather styles featuring a metal-capped, pointy-toe, biker-meets-schoolgirl look made with equal parts herringbone and leather.

Steven Tyler Makes First Ever Visit to the Playboy Mansion

Steven Tyler poses with Playboy Bunnies at the 15th anniversary of Rock ‘N’ Roll Fantasy Camp at The Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills

Paul Archuleta

Steven Tyler walked up the driveway to the entrance of the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles like it was a second home. Surrounded by a large entourage as he was led to the red carpet, Tyler stopped to bare a Cheshire Cat’s grin as he looked at the four lovely Playboy Bunnies waiting to pose for pictures with him. The rock star and the equally iconic home that has hosted thousands of parties seemed made for each other, but this was Tyler’s first visit ever to the Holmby Hills grounds.

How was that possible that in all the years of Aerosmith’s success, the frontman had never been to one of the famous Halloween parties or a Midsummer Night’s Dream? “I was too busy in someone’s bathroom getting high,” Tyler told Rolling Stone. “I was too busy on tour, I was too busy writing songs. We were just busy.”

While he had never been to the house that Hef built, Tyler has crossed paths with the famed Lothario, Hugh Hefner. And Tyler is a big fan. “I love people that are committed to their crimes of passion and he is the gentleman of all time,” Tyler told us. “He’s been on every man’s mind around the world at least a hundred times in their lifetime for what he did. So he signifies the joys of womanhood and not the degradation . . . and even women love Playboy.”

What finally brought Tyler to the mansion after more than 40 years in the spotlight was Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp, a program that allows people to live out their rock & roll dreams and spend four intense days training with counselors to play with Tyler or other superstars, such as Kiss’ Gene Simmons, who will be the headliner at an upcoming event in Las Vegas from October 10th through 14th.

Tyler got involved with the camp last year through Mark Hudson, a counselor in the program who co-wrote Aerosmith’s “Livin’ On The Edge.” “We spoke last year, I was doing a book, and they asked me here and I said I would, and I spoke in front of the whole camp. It’s called just being a mentor, if not to incite a riot,” he says.

Tyler had a challenge for this week’s campers, who joined him on stage at the mansion last night. “I just dared them all to learn an Aerosmith song to see how good they can do it,” he says. “If they do it good, which I’m sure they will, I’m gonna pick the best group of them all, we’re gonna pick straws and the best one out of that gets to ride around in my car and hear the new Aerosmith album.”

When Tyler says, while speaking of the upcoming record, “I’m on fire, as you can tell,” he is not exaggerating. Despite being pulled away by several handlers, he doesn’t want to stop talking about the new music, which is now in the mixing stages. “It’s one of the best Aerosmith albums ever,” he says. “I’m one of the worst judges of my own music because I’m very harsh, highly critical. [But] we waited until we had at least four really good songs that were representative and we got 19.”

How to pick a perfume just right for you

By D. PARVAZ, P-I REPORTER
English: Full resolution image of Coco Mademoi...

What has the power to repulse or seduce, amuse and shock, make an elevator a torture chamber or a pleasant mini-vacation?

Scent, that’s what.

In Patrick Suskind‘s beautifully written “Perfume,” the central character is scentless — a condition that feeds his madness and drives him to try to bottle the scent of humanity. Coco Chanel herself said: “A woman who doesn’t wear perfume has no future.”

Sure, she was overstating the case, but the importance of scent cannot be dismissed. People can smell us often before they can see us, and no matter how beautiful, cool and intelligent a person is, if he or she smells bad, they’re doomed to a life of solitude. Plus, scent, like taste — and the two are linked — seems to live longer than any visual memory. Remember your grandmother’s perfume? How about that guy you sat next to on the bus last week — the one who either smelled dreamy or like crusty sweat? You might not remember the visual details, but chances are you’ll remember how they smelled. Continue reading

Five Hair Healthcare Myths and One Unfortunate Truth

By Timothy Boyer

Hair healthcare myths are as plentiful as cold remedies. Passed down from generation to generation, we’ve grown up with them, swore by them and more likely than not will pass on myths such these and myriad other myths to our children in the name of health and good parenting. But it doesn’t have to be that way. According to “O” The Oprah Magazine, if you believe in hair healthcare myths, now is the time to rethink what you think you know and learn the truth about hair healthcare and—one unfortunate truth about men and hair.

Hair Healthcare Myth No. 1: Frequent trims make your hair grow faster.

False. Cutting your hair does nothing to stimulate hair follicle growth in the scalp. According to experts, hair grows on average approximately ¼ inch per month regardless of whether you cut it or trim it on a regular basis or not. What some stylists say is happening is that trimming to remove split ends can actually make hair appear longer because split ends cause breakage which thins the hair at the ends and gives the appearance that the hair is shorter. Fashion for all ages

If you want to look younger or older, the clothes you wear can have a large impression on this. If you are in your late teens and want to look more grown up, below are some tips to looking more elegant and womanly. Equally, there are some hints of how to knock a few years off for the older ladies.

Although online shopping is a relaxing hobby, where you can chat to friends, browse through dozens of clothes, while playing Foxy Bingo, it is not a reliable way of guaranteeing an item is going to look good on you. If you want your outfit to be perfect, it is important that you try on the clothes before you buy them. In addition, you can easily find some matching accessories in the shop to compliment your outfit.

For young women wishing to maintain their youth, yet look sophisticated and elegant, there are a couple of main tricks you can try. If you are attending a formal dinner or a ball, try to avoid wearing short and tight fitted dresses. This will look like you are going clubbing, hence showing your age. Instead, why not wear a longer dress which sits just below the knee and is gently fitted. A silk black, or deep purple strapless dress is striking and elegant. Wearing your hair up in a bun will show off your shoulders, plus, adding small kitten heels means there is no chance of tripping in high stilettos. Shoes like this are often worn by the younger generation which is why we are trying to avoid them

For those women who are trying to look a little bit younger, tip one, don’t steal your daughters clothes. Whether you have your post-child figure or not, there is no reason why you should shy away behind big jumpers or baggy tops. Make yourself look younger, vibrant and stunning by showing off your figure, lifting the hem line just an inch and wearing a bolder shade of lipstick. Colorful wrap around dresses are perfect for this effect; they are fashionable, striking and sit at the knee, which is a good middle ground length. The wrap-around design is perfect for any size or figure because they can be loosened or tightened to your shape. The dress helps to emphasise your curves and with a pair of small heels, makes your legs look longer. Accessorize with some funky long necklaces and bangle bracelets. You still look elegant, but the trendy style of dress and accessories add a youthful touch.

Harajuku: Punks and Bloody Marys in Downtown Tokyo – Japan, Asia

Japan is frequently described as a country of contrasts between tradition and technology, a country of paradoxes. This does not fully encapsulate the Japanese ying and yang. Harajuku shows a different set of contrasts – the contrasts within the Japanese people; how they can be studious and shy during the week, wild and extreme on the weekends. Continue reading

1910s in fashion

1914 fashion plate illustrating evening gown b...

Fashion in the years 1910–1919 is characterized by a rich and exotic opulence in the first half of the decade in contrast with the somber practicality of garments worn during the Great War. Men’s trousers were worn cuffed to ankle-length and creased. Skirts rose from floor length to well above the ankle, women began to bob their hair, and the stage was set for the radical new fashions associated with the Jazz Age of the 1920s.

Women’s fashion

During the early years of the 1910s the fashionable silhouette became much more lithe, fluid and soft than in the 1900s. When the Ballets Russes performed Scheherazade in Paris in 1910, a craze for Orientalism ensued. The couturier Paul Poiret was one of the first designers to translate this vogue into the fashion world. Poiret’s clients were at once transformed into harem girls in flowing pantaloons, turbans, and vivid colors and geishas in exotic kimono. The Art Nouveau movement began to emerge at this time and its influence was evident in the designs of many couturiers of the time. Simple felt hats, turbans, and clouds of tulle replaced the styles of headgear popular in the 1900s. It is also notable that the first real fashion shows were organized during this period in time, by the first female couturier, Jeanne Paquin, who was also the first Parisian couturier to open foreign branches in London, Buenos Aires, and Madrid.

Two of the most influential fashion designers of the time were Jacques Doucet and Mariano Fortuny. The French designer Jacques Doucet excelled in superimposing pastel colors and his elaborate gossamery dresses suggested the Impressionistshimmers of reflected light. His distinguished customers never lost a taste for his fluid lines and flimsy, diaphanous materials. While obeying imperatives that left little to the imagination of the couturier, Doucet was nonetheless a designer of immense taste and discrimination, a role many have tried since, but rarely with Doucet’s level of success.
